On the morning of 17th March 2011, fifty-three-year-old Ahmed Jan was sitting at an assembly led by local elders in Datta Khel intending to discuss a dispute on chromite extraction in the region. Several missiles launched from an unmanned aircraft landed meters away from where he was seating and reportedly killing at least 32, most of them civilians and elders from local villages. Ahmed Jan survived the attack, but he lost the use of one of his foot and has serious hearing problems. The U.S. Military claimed that several Taliban militants were present at that meeting.
